Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to attend a  workshop?

Not at all! You can complete all your training through Childbirth International using your written student manuals and the student website.

Workshops for birth professionals training are generally run over a weekend. They provide the basics of support or classes but are unable to focus on the skills that develop over time such as communication and reflective practice. In addition, there is only so much you can learn on the physiological processes of pregnancy and birth in a 2-3 day period!

The other downside of a workshop is the hidden costs. The cost of transport, accommodation, meals and childcare. Completing your training with Childbirth International means you know what your costs are up front, with no extra fees for certification or recertifying.

Our written study guides walk you through the techniques available to help the women you will work with. The discussion board and chat sessions provide you with a peer support network to explore different issues related to your work and provide you with support from other students and your tutors.

Most of the hands on skills that a birth professional learns, she develops over time and with experience. Every woman you work with will have different needs and preferences. As part of a worldwide network of birth and postnatal doulas, antenatal teachers and breastfeeding counsellors you will be able to access ideas, tips and strategies for helping you in your work and in building your business.

In addition to the Childbirth International training, trainers in your area may offer study days. These are a complement to the training course and focus on some of the hands on skills and topics that can be beneficial to learn in a face to face environment.
